RDA give their views on the Maximalist Trend

Social Media has given us an appetite for and encouraged us to become collectors of aspirational imagery. The combination of touch of a button technology which can transport us to any country or genre and access to easy travel, has exposed us to complex, richly patterned cultural references from across the world.

So, it’s no wonder then that Hoteliers and restauranteurs and even business and industry are tapping into the “Maximalist” trend and creating inspiring, bold statement spaces with global personality and Instagram potential.

With over a decade in design RDA has a wealth of experience of creating innovative and beautiful spaces. We are seeing more and more clients taking on this trend as a way of making a statement. Being bold and confident is key – geometric and artisan tiles as well as vibrant colours, fabrics and wallpapers are just some of the key elements to this look and feel.

Here are just some of the projects we are working on or have worked on recently which have embraced elements of this look to really make their mark and reflect the personality of their catering space.

HSBC UK Headquarters Birmingham

We have recently secured the contract to design and install the catering facilities at the new HSBC UK headquarters in Birmingham.

The design will be fresh, modern and quirky. There will be a strong use of plants throughout with vibrant colours, geometrical fabrics and tiles, multi-functional seating areas and eating spaces and two terraces with outdoor counters and a barbeque terrace.

Whitegates Nursery

We are currently working on a new café project for Whitegates Nursery in North Yorkshire. The design is a modern twist on a country cottage kitchen with bold teal colours, mixed with artisan tiling and bold floral wallpapers.

The Counter, Glasgow

To introduce some of the California sunshine to The Counter Glasgow, which saw us through to the finals of The Northern Design Awards in 2017, we included a wall-long façade featuring Santa Monica Beach, paying homage to the first opening for The Counter in Los Angeles. This sits alongside the ‘Burger Love’ wall, which offers diners the perfect backdrop for selfies and social media snaps – inspired by Los Angeles street art. Both of which show maximalism at its best.

Technip FMC Umbilicals

When Technip FMC Umbilicals Ltd. was creating a new office development at its northeast based facilities, it called on our team of experts to create modern catering facilities fit for 21 century workers.

The result is a modern and bold servery area with feature tiling and bright colours to the front counter, microwave station with integrated fridges for self-service and a brand-new kitchen with ample storage.
